Maintenance Battalion, Company C "Envelope''

This is an original censored WWII Army Cover (envelope with bicolored border) dated September 30, 1943 and is franked with stamp #C25 "Air Mail". The envelop was sent by S/Sgt. Sam Tabas to Mrs. S. Tabas of 4121 North Damen Avenue, Chicago, Illinois. Nevertheless the envelope contains nothing. The address the envelope was sent from was APO#259 which was in Camp Ibis, California on this date. (During September 1943 the 9th Armored Division departed Camp Ibis as its base camp, and moved into the desert for three weeks of division exercises).

Samuel "Sam" Tabas (#36022411) was a member of Company C, Maintnance Battalion at the time this letter was written. Sam Tabas from Cook County, Illinois, was born on November 24, 1915, in Illinois. He had a 3 years of high school education and his occupation was listed as "Barbers, beauticians and manicurists". He entered the service as a draftee on October 2, 1941 at Chicago, Illinois. He took part in the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 and January 1945. In the ETO, Company C of the 131st Ordnance Maintenance Battalion was part of CCB of the 9th Armored Division.

After the war, Sam Tabas was a salesman for Pivot Point International, a beauty supply firm. He had worked for Pivot Point International for 12 years. Before that for 20 years he was the owner of a beauty shop at 2655 North Clark Street, Chicago, Illinois.

Samuel Tabas, of Niles, Illinois, died on April 7, 1988 in Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge, Illinois. At that time (1988), he is survived by a daughter, Judith Stern, two sons, David and Barry, four grandchildren, a sister and a brother.
